Good Sam vs AAA for RVs: Which Roadside Plan Is Better?

Please note: Roadside plans, prices and limits change, and AAA coverage differs by regional club. The details below were checked on Good Sam’s website and AAA club websites in October 2026. Always read the current plan terms before you buy. See our full disclaimer at the end of this article.

For most recreational vehicle (RV) owners, Good Sam Roadside Assistance is the better fit than AAA (the American Automobile Association), because its Platinum plan tows your RV to the nearest service center with no mileage limit, while AAA’s RV add-ons cap towing at 100 or 200 miles and set dollar limits per call. AAA can still make sense if you already have a AAA Plus or Premier membership for your cars and mainly need short tows. This guide compares Good Sam and AAA for RVs plan by plan, so you can pick the one that matches your rig and how you travel.

Key Takeaways

  • Good Sam towing has no distance limit to the nearest independent service center. Towing somewhere else you choose can cost extra.
  • Pick Good Sam Platinum for a motorhome or fifth wheel. The Standard plan does not cover motorized RVs or fifth wheels.
  • AAA RV coverage is an add-on to a AAA Plus or Premier membership, and every member on the account must be at that level.
  • AAA RV towing is limited to 100 miles with Plus RV, or one tow up to 200 miles with Premier RV, and many clubs cap RV service at $500 per call.
  • Good Sam coverage starts 48 hours after payment, so buy before your trip, not on the side of the road.

Good Sam Roadside Assistance Plans Explained

Good Sam lists three main plans. These are the regular yearly prices shown in October 2026. Good Sam often runs sales on the first year, and the regular price applies after that.

  • Standard ($129.95 a year): covers vehicles you own, including one travel trailer, plus cars, trucks, SUVs and motorcycles. It does not cover motorized RVs or fifth wheels.
  • Platinum ($159.95 a year): covers owned, leased or rented vehicles, including travel trailers, fifth wheels and motorized RVs. This is the plan most RV owners need.
  • Platinum Complete ($239.95 a year): everything in Platinum, plus tire and wheel road hazard coverage and emergency travel and medical assistance.

On all plans, Good Sam pays to tow your vehicle to the nearest independent service center, no matter the distance. It will also deliver up to 5 gallons of fuel, change a flat tire with your spare, and send someone to unlock your vehicle. You pay for parts, tires and labor.

AAA Coverage for RVs Explained

A basic AAA Classic membership is built for cars. To cover an RV, you need to be a AAA Plus or Premier member and then add RV coverage:

  • AAA Plus RV adds RV and motorcycle coverage with tows of up to 100 miles.
  • AAA Premier RV gives one tow of up to 200 miles a year and up to 100 miles on other service calls, and also covers some other towables such as boats and utility trailers.

Several AAA clubs limit RV towing, extrication and tire service to $500 per service call and $1,000 per household each membership year, and you pay any amount above that to the service provider. AAA is made up of regional clubs, so prices and rules depend on where you live. Check the terms with your local club before you add RV coverage.

Which Is Better for Your RV?

Choose Good Sam if you:

  • Own a motorhome, fifth wheel or large travel trailer
  • Travel far from home or in remote areas, where the nearest RV repair shop may be more than 100 miles away
  • Rent RVs, since Platinum covers rented vehicles
  • Want one plan that covers both your RV and your family’s cars

Choose AAA if you:

  • Already have AAA Plus or Premier and use AAA’s other benefits, such as travel discounts
  • Have a small, light trailer and mostly camp close to home
  • Rarely need long tows

Some RV owners keep both: AAA for their everyday cars and its other member perks, such as travel discounts, and Good Sam for the RV. Keep in mind that both plans also cover your cars, so with both you would be paying twice for roadside help on your cars. If you don’t use AAA’s other perks, Good Sam Platinum alone may be enough.

Before You Call for Help

  • Get your RV off the road safely, turn on your hazard lights and set out warning triangles.
  • Know your RV’s length, height, weight and whether it is gas or diesel. The tow truck has to be the right size.
  • Have your exact location ready. A highway mile marker or your phone’s GPS (Global Positioning System) location helps.
  • Keep your membership card or app handy.
