How to Get the Most Out of an RV Show

An RV show is the easiest way to walk through dozens of RVs in one day, compare floor plans side by side and talk to dealers, manufacturers and campground owners in person. A little planning makes the visit far more useful.

2. Bring your numbers. Write down your budget, your tow vehicle’s towing capacity (if you will tow), the size of your driveway or storage space, and how many people need to sleep in the RV.
3. Make a must-have list. Bed size, bathroom layout, kitchen space, storage and slide-outs matter more day to day than décor. Rank your top five features so a shiny extra does not distract you.
4. Walk every type, even outside your budget. Seeing a layout you love in a pricier RV helps you find something similar for less.
5. Go early or on a weekday. Opening hours and weekdays are usually quieter, so you get more time inside each RV and with the salespeople.
6. Ask about show-only offers, but compare the total price. Many shows advertise special pricing or incentives. Ask for the full “out-the-door” price, including fees, delivery and taxes, and get it in writing.
7. Do not feel pressured to buy that day. Take photos, collect brochures and business cards, and sleep on it. A good deal will still be there after you have compared options.
8. Visit the campground and gear booths. Shows often include campgrounds, rally organizers and accessory vendors, which are great for planning your next trip.

When is RV show season?

Most consumer RV shows take place from January through April, when people are planning their summer travel. There is a second, smaller season in September and October, when dealers clear out the current model year. America’s Largest RV Show in Hershey, Pennsylvania, is held each September.

Are RV shows open to the public?

Most RV shows listed here are open to the public, usually for an admission fee, and some are free. A few industry events, such as dealer open houses, are aimed at the trade. Check each event’s website for tickets and hours.

Can you buy an RV at an RV show?

Yes. Most RVs on display are offered for sale by participating dealers, and you can usually sign a purchase agreement at the show. Delivery normally happens later at the dealership, which is also when you should get a full walkthrough.

Do RV shows have better deals than dealerships?

Sometimes. Many shows offer show-only pricing or incentives, and having many dealers in one place makes it easier to compare. Still, compare the total out-the-door price with what local dealers offer before you decide.

Can I bring my dog to an RV show?

It depends on the show. Many indoor shows allow only service animals, while some outdoor events and rallies are pet-friendly. Check the event’s website before you bring a pet.

How far ahead should I plan to attend an RV show?

For a local show, a week or two is usually enough. For large national shows like Hershey or the Florida RV SuperShow in Tampa, book your campground or hotel several months ahead, because nearby spots fill up quickly.
